Lady Hardinge Medical College

Lady Hardinge Medical College was founded in 1916. It is the frontrunner in the field of medical education & has an exclusive distinction of being the only medical college in India that trains women undergraduate students. LHMC was started by Lady Hardinge of Penhurst the wife of then Viceroy of India. The main objective was to give equal opportunity for women to study medicine as cultures at that time did not allow women to study in co- educational institutions.

Lady Hardinge Medical College is spread across a campus of 60 acres of land. It was originally opened by Lord Hardinge in February 1916 together with Dr Kate Platt M.D as its first Principal & with just 14-16 students. Admissions in the Lady Hardinge medical College have increased the capacity for the MBBS course, as it can accommodate more the 200 seats. Lady Hardinge medical college has also planned to completely renovate the institution to accommodate increased faculty, staff, bed strength, new buildings & required infrastructure.

Lady Hardinge Medical College began as an autonomous institution which was managed by a Governing Body & in 1978 the management was taken over by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare under an Act of Parliament. LHMC has 2 teaching hospitals, one is the Smt. Sucheta Kriplani Hospital and the other is the Kalawati Saran Children Hospital. Both have about 877 and 350 beds respectively. LHMC is a WHO collaborating center for orientation and training in streptococcal diseases for South East Asia as surveillance center for AIDS.

LHMC has done a yeoman service in advancement of medical education for women in India. It has numerous eminent alumni to its credit. Some of them are Dr Sumedha Khanna of W.H.O & Dr Saroj Pachauri of Ford Foundation. Lady Hardinge medical college has the credit of producing 6125 graduates & 2564 postgraduates in different medical & surgical specializations. Placement

College  provides placement assistance to all its students. The dedicated placement cell regularly conducts grooming sessions of the students in areas like soft skills, interview facing skills, behavioral skills hereby making them industry-fit. In the recent years the college has witnessed some well known recruitment companies walking-in and being invited for campus placements.

Campus

The college campus is huge which consists of a hostel, hospital and also lecture rooms. Being a government college, the overall infrastructure is less appealing particularly the road that leads to the college building from the main gate which is filled with many bamboos and iron pipes. The lecture rooms are clean and air-conditioned. Labs are maintained well and are fully equipped with all the apparatus. There are loads of books in the library and hence issuing any book is done hassle free. But, there is no wi-fi connectivity in the campus and hostels.

The college provides facility for a hostel and charges peanuts for it, Rs. 500 for 5 years. Even though the rental charges are EXTREMELY less, the apartments, washrooms and the floors are quite neat and clean and the association rarely gets a complaint from the students. Mess charges are separate, the food is just about edible and tolerable as well.
